How is it December already?! I’m really not sure where the time has gone – but one exciting thing that’s been happening in my life is that I am finally, finally almost done (for reals) with grad school! As you can imagine, things are a bit hectic, and I haven’t been as rigorous in writing blog posts lately as I should have. Plus, I haven’t really been too adventurous these days with my dinner outings – it’s pretty much been Korean food or ramen. I promise that I’ll have some new posts coming soon, but in the meantime, enjoy this latest rendition of “Misc Pics Post”…
The King’s Craft Coffee
A few months ago, The King’s Craft Coffee shop opened up in Poway – the owner is actually former San Diego Chargers player Cory Withrow, who opened up this coffee shop as a way to engage his local community. I was invited on their Grand Opening day (back in September) to check it out and sampled a cold brew while I was there.
The cold brew was very smooth and quite enjoyable. It had been a while since I had cold brew, and I had forgotten that they could be pretty caffeinated! I was a bit jittery all afternoon – next time I’ll have to remember to grab a bite to eat along with my drink. The shop serves an assortment of pastries and paninis, which looked delicious.
With the cooler weather we’ve been having lately, I’m always craving something hot to drink. I’ll have to make a revisit to TKC soon.

I mentioned that I’ve been eating a lot of ramen lately. Well, Nishiki has been my go-to spot, mostly because they keep sending me coupons via text message. Their menu has been revamped a bit lately, with a more fusion flavor profile. You can see their new menu on their website.
My usual order is the Nishiki Ramen – it’s changed a bit from the first version that I had last year, featuring tonkotsu broth instead of a tonkotsu and chicken broth mix, making it a bit heavier and richer. The toppings are a bit different, too – no more okra and baby corn. While I still enjoy the ramen here, I kind of miss the old version.
J’s favorite here is the Smoke Bomb Black, which includes a rich and flavorful black garlic sauce.
Writing this actually reminds me that I haven’t been to Santouka or Yamadaya in a while… Should pay those places a revisit sometime, too. Santouka (and Mitsuwa) have actually extended their hours now (until 9PM, I believe), making it easier for me to visit on weeknights.

As I mentioned in my Marine Room post, my birthday was last month. I also had a chance to use Cafe 21‘s generous birthday offer of one free entrée during my birthday month (with purchase of another entrée).
Beef Cabbage Rolls
Braised Short Rib
I enjoyed both of these entrées – the Beef Cabbage Rolls definitely stood out to me because of the unique spices used to flavor the beef. The short rib was wonderfully tender and flavorful, and I really loved the accompanying sweet potato purée and sweet pea tendrils.
Cafe 21 is one of my favorite brunch spots in town, and their dinner was delicious as well. They provide one of the most generous birthday offers in town, and I highly recommend that you sign up for their mailing list to receive the offer!

Whew, that’s about all that I have for you today. There are more photos waiting to be processed… Hopefully I will share them with you soon. Happy December!
