Florent Restaurant & Lounge is a popular downtown spot for drinks and live music, with bars on multiple levels of the restaurant. They also boast a delicious food menu, and I was recently invited for dinner to check it out.
Our dinner reservation was at 7:30pm, and the restaurant was not too crowded yet. By the time we left, it was starting to fill up. The World Series (game 3?) was on, and there were both Cubs and Indians fans in the house cheering. There was also a guitarist providing live music – the atmosphere was quite lively!
Neither my date nor I were feeling like alcohol that night, so we skipped the drinks and just ordered several items from their food menu to try out.
Togarashi Seared Ahi [$15]
I was immediately drawn to the seared ahi in the appetizers section. I enjoyed the flavorful togarashi (a Japanese spice mix containing 7 ingredients) crust, which added a lovely textural contrast to the soft ahi tuna. I couldn’t taste the vinegar in the sushi rice, though it was a nice accompaniment along with the seaweed salad and mango vinaigrette.
Short Rib Tacos [$12]
I also wanted to try out these short rib tacos, featured braised short rib with a roasted corn salsa, shaved cabbage, avocado cream, and cotija cheese, all atop a flour tortilla. The short ribs were super tender, and I also quite enjoyed all the toppings.
Grilled New York Steak [$28]
Steak was calling out to us that day! The 10-oz NY strip was grilled to a perfect medium-rare topped with a bourbon-cherry demi-glace (that was just a tad salty towards the end), and accompanied by grilled asparagus and an amazing butternut squash gratin. I wish that I had taken more photos of that gratin, but it was cheesy, buttery, and absolutely delicious. (Of course, it probably also helps that I love butternut squash!) The steak itself was also yummy, but I must say that the gratin was probably our favorite component of the entire dinner, hehe.
Overall, we had a lovely dinner at Florent Restaurant & Lounge. The place has a casual yet sophisticated atmosphere, and we enjoyed everything that we ate. Next time, we will definitely be trying out some of the drinks from the extensive list!
