Ajisen Ramen, a popular worldwide ramen chain, recently opened its first location in San Diego! I’ve actually seen the sign up for months now and always wondering when it would open. Well, last Saturday was the Grand Opening, and while I did not attend the ribbon cutting ceremony, I actually visited for a late dinner with a few friends on the first day.
We were presented with a huge 14-page menu. I’ve never been to an Ajisen Ramen before, but my friends who have told me that the menu here is much more extensive. Interestingly, the menu is in Japanese, English, and Chinese – I suppose they have a large Chinese customer base, with several locations in the Eastern parts of LA.
In addition to ramen, Ajisen offers drinks (including boba!), appetizers, sushi rolls, other noodle dishes, salads, rice dishes and bentos, and even a large variety of desserts. I was pretty overwhelmed by the menu since there were so many things – and all the pictures looked so good! But in the end, everyone at my table still settled on ramen, hehe.
Ajisen Best Combo Ramen [$9.95]
Half of my group, including J, ordered the “ABC” Ramen, which includes 3 different types of meat – tender pork ribs, premium pork, and BBQ pork – and wood-ear mushrooms, cabbage, and green onions in a tonkotsu broth.
Tender Pork Ribs Ramen [$9.45]
I chose the “Tender Pork Ribs” ramen, even though the pork ribs were part of the ABC – I guess I was really interested in the pork ribs! The vegetable toppings and broth were also the same as the ABC. I liked that the broth was relatively light and not too salty, and the noodles were firm and had a nice bite. The meats were also quite nice – the pork ribs were indeed quite tender, as were the chashu and sliced pork.
Fried Oyster [$3.95]
My friends ordered the fried oysters appetizer – I didn’t try this, but they liked it. The batter seemed to be quite crispy, and I may try this or one of the other fried appetizers next time.
Overall, I enjoyed the food at Ajisen. While I am already quite satisfied with our ramen selection in San Diego, having more options is always good. There is also more variety here, and I am already planning some different things to try on my next visit. They also offer really great lunch special deals! I’ll have to check them out during lunch sometime.
