Kula Revolving Sushi Bar opened its San Diego location quite some time ago, but it wasn’t until recently that I visited – the long wait usually deterred me, but finally I made my way there one Friday evening.
I went around 8:30PM, and the wait was still quite intimidating – the electronic queuing system estimated our wait time to be around 80 minutes. However, I was prepared for the wait that day and stuck it out.
Kula serves “revolving” sushi, which means plates of sushi and nigiri are sent down a conveyor belt that runs by all the tables in the restaurant. When you see something that you like, simply grab it off the conveyor belt and dispose of the empty plate in a slot at your table. In addition to taking items that are coming around, you can also order specific dishes from screens at each seat, and those items will be “sent” you to via a second conveyor belt that stops right in front of you! I didn’t take too many photos of this system, but you can check out photos (and videos!) from Faye, Kirbie, CC, and Darren.
Here’s an assortment of photos of what we ate – each plate is $2.25.
Red Snapper with Yuzu Pepper
Garlic Ponzu Salmon
Of all the fish that I tried, my favorites were the salmon, red snapper, and yellowtail. I had never had raw bonito before (well, I should say that I’ve never had bonito in non-dried-and-shaved form before), and it was interesting – but think I preferred the dried flaky version.
Sea urchin is a “premium” item so there is only 1 piece on each plate. It was a delicious indulgence for me, hehe.
Spicy Yellowtail Hand Roll
Finally, I like to finish my sushi meals with a hand roll, and this spicy yellowtail one hit the spot. There was a bit too much sauce at the top part, but once you got further down the roll, the flavors were nicely balanced. There was also a generous amount of yellowtail!
Overall, I had a nice and yummy meal at Kula. I felt that the fish was fresh and pretty nice quality, and the revolving-style sushi is upbeat and fun. Even though it’s a bit pricey and the wait times are long, I would definitely still come back!
