My dad was in town recently for a quick visit, and he was in the mood for dumplings – so I took him to check out Great Wow, a newly-opened dumpling-and-noodles (“flour” foods) restaurant that received positive reviews from Kirk and Kirbie.
The place wasn’t busy when we visited for a late-ish dinner on a Thursday night. Their menu lists a variety of noodles, dumplings, and stir-fried dishes – we just chose a few to sample.
I really liked these condiment containers placed at every table with soy sauce, vinegar, white pepper, and chili oil. For some reason, the metallic look really appealed to me.
Xiao Long Bao 小籠包 [$9.9]
A friend had recommended the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) here, and I was in the mood to try them. The skin on these was a tad thick, but the filling was good, and there was plenty of soup.
Pork & Napa Dumplings 豬肉白菜水餃 [$8.9]
We chose a standard pork & napa cabbage dumplings to try out and were quite happy. The wrappers had a nice texture, the pork was tasty, and the dumplings were filled generously.
Layered Pork Pancake 千層豬肉餅 [$9.9]
Minced pork meat was stuffed into “rolls” of Chinese pancake and pan-fried – these reminded me of the beef rolls served at Liang’s Kitchen or other Taiwanese restaurants, but I enjoyed these more because the pan-frying gave the rolls a crispy exterior. After our orders came out, I sort of wished that we had opted for a beef filling since everything else that we tried was pork, but the pork was good so no real complaints there, haha.
Overall, we had a pleasant meal at Great Wow – I enjoyed everything that we ate there and would definitely return next time that I’m craving dumplings. I’d also like to try out some of their noodle dishes next time!
