Breakfast Republic is one of San Diego’s most highly-rated and popular brunch spots, but I hadn’t visited because the wait always intimidated me. However, I heard that the lines at their newly-opened second location at Liberty Public Market was much shorter, so I grabbed a few friends and went to check it out.
We were first told that the wait would be an hour and a half, but after about half an hour, we went back to check our position in line and was pleasantly surprised that there would be a table available for us! It was a nice day, so we were happy to be seated on the patio.
I loved these egg-shaped salt & pepper shakers, hehe.
Breakfast Quesadilla [$9]
Open-faced quesadilla with scrambled eggs, bacon, tomato, green onion, jack & cheddar cheese, green bell pepper, topped with mango salsa.
I saw a photo of the Breakfast Quesadilla on Kirbie’s Cravings and knew that I wanted to try it. The eggs were scrambled to a perfect fluffiness, and I loved the combination of toppings and melty cheese.
French Toast Sampler [$18]
All of us shared a French Toast Sampler – except we weren’t exactly adventurous and picked 2 S’mores and 1 Banana Split… minus the banana, haha (yes, the waitress looked a bit confused). I was mostly interested in the S’mores French toast, topped with toasted marshmallows and drizzled with chocolate sauce. I was initially concerned that this would be on the sweet side, but it was actually just right. I also tried a bit of the banana-less Banana Split (pretty much just French toast + ice cream), which was also yummy – I liked the temperature contrast between the warm French toast and vanilla ice cream.
House-Made Crab Cake Benedict [$14]
My friend ordered the Crab Cake Benedict – I didn’t try any, but the Hollandaise sauce looked lovely, and she said that the crab cake was tasty. Many of the benedicts on the menu looked delicious, and I’ll have to check them out in the future.
Even though I’ve heard raving reviews about the espresso drinks here – and all of them sounded so good – we actually had a lot of eating and drinking to do that day, so we skipped on the drinks this time. I was definitely eyeing other diners’ beautifully-crafted mochas and lattes with envy, though! More things to try out next time.
Overall, we had a lovely brunch at Breakfast Republic. Everything we tried was delicious, and I am definitely itching to return. I also got to walk around Liberty Public Market for the first time and thought that it was quite nice – I’ll have to do a full post on it sometime soon!
