OO Tea is yet another newly-opened bubble tea shop in San Diego, and the one that I was most excited about because its parent company is the famous “50嵐” tea shop from Taiwan. San Diego is actually the store’s first U.S. franchise location – yay us!
OO Tea is located inside the 99 Ranch market, quite a convenient location. We’ve actually visited many, many times already and I’ve just recently remembered to take some photos of our orders…
I thought that I had gotten photos of all 3 menu screens, but I’m not sure what happened to the other 2… Sorry!
You might have noticed that on the menu, they serve both “pearl” and “boba” – and wondered, shouldn’t these be the same thing? Actually, in the southern parts of Taiwan (where bubble tea originated), “boba” refers to the large tapioca pearls, whereas “pearl” refers to the mini ones. (FYI… “boba” is also Taiwanese slang for boobs… which is why they refer to the larger ones :P )
Pictured above are the orders from one of our visits: Yogurt Green Tea, Milk Tea with Pearls, and regular Milk Tea in the back. I really like the green tea here, although I actually like the milk green tea more than the yogurt version. The pearls/boba here are also quite good, with a nice chewiness and a bit of brown sugar flavor. We also like the black milk tea, which is made with Assam tea.
Like the majority of milk tea shops, you can choose your level of sweetness (0, 30%, 50%, 70%, or 100%) and ice (none/less/regular). I usually opt for 30% or 50% sugar, since I like a stronger tea taste in my drink. I haven’t tried their grass jelly topping yet, but I learned recently that you can mix the toppings in one drink with no additional charge! I might try that next time, hehe.
Overall, OO Tea has definitely become our new favorite milk tea spot in San Diego. I’m really hoping that they’ll expand their hours (right now they close everyday at 8:30pm), but it doesn’t seem likely since they’re inside the 99 Ranch building. If you still haven’t been here yet, definitely give it a try! Even though the drinks here are basic (no fancy toppings or flavors), they really do taste the best in my opinion.
Also check out Kirbie’s post from her visit! She has much better menu photos.
