S and I used to be pretty big fans of coffee, but ever since starting grad school we’ve actually cut down quite a bit – I guess we’ve just gotten lazy about brewing our own. But I still keep an eye out for the popular coffee shops in San Diego, and recently we visited Zumbar Coffee & Tea, a rather nondescript-looking storefront in Sorrento Valley.
The main reason we visited was actually to buy coffee beans – we are visiting Taiwan for a couple of weeks, and S’s family likes coffee. We found out that Zumbar roasts their own coffee beans and were quite interested.
There were a variety of single-origins and blends available. The Bellringer is a blend of African and Latin American, and the El Mundo is an Indonesian and African blend. The Hummingbird is their espresso blend. S wanted to know if they were brewing any of the single origins ones that day, but unfortunately they had just run out of the Guatemala. He settled on a cup of the El Mundo, which I didn’t photograph, but was quite good – it wasn’t too acidic, which I liked, but not too dark either.
Our friend also recommended their latte, and since I’ve sort of been into espresso drinks lately I decided to try one. It was indeed quite good – I can’t quite describe it, but the roasted flavor of the espresso really came through (unlike some lattes where I feel like I’m just drinking a cup of milk).
We visited a bit later in the day, so the pastry case didn’t have much left. Maybe next time I’ll get a croissant with my drink.
In the end, we bought a bag (12 oz) of the Guatemala Todos Santos coffee beans for S’s family. As you can see from the stamp, these are pretty freshly roasted!
S’s mom brewed a cup this morning and quite enjoyed the taste. I haven’t tried it yet but am happy that they liked it!
One last thing – S and I just got to Taiwan last night! I’ll still try to post regularly but in case we get busy these couple of weeks, please follow our food adventures on Instagram!
