While we were in Encinitas last month, S and I wanted a snack and decided to check out Betty’s Pie Whole, sister bakery of Elizabethan Desserts. Upon entering, I immediately fell in love with the saloon-style decor and bright feeling of the place.
We arrived in the late afternoon, and quite a few of the pie offerings were sold out. We looked through the display cases and still found a few that we wanted to try!
Sorry for the glare… blargh.
We picked two mini pies – one savory and one sweet – to enjoy at the restaurant, and took one home for later. This was one of the few savory pies that they still had left – it has eggs, potatoes, turkey bacon, smoked poultry sausage, and cheese, all baked into a biscuit crust. At first I was quite skeptical of the biscuit crust, but it actually turned out to be quite good – the crust was flaky and buttery, less firm than a traditional pie crust, but definitely created a “breakfast-y” feeling. We thought that it would have been better if they used pork bacon and sausage (of course), but still enjoyed it a lot. We picked key lime for our sweet pie – I had a hard time deciding between this or the lemon meringue, but in the end key lime won out. The filling was smooth and custardy, without being too eggy or sweet. I also loved the ring of meringue on top – so basically we got the best part of the lemon meringue pie anyway, hehe. The pie crust was also really good – it was a graham cracker crust that had the perfect crunch and tad of salt to bring out the sweetness of the pie.
We also chose a mini pie to go, the pecan pie:Pecan pie used to always be my favorite – it was basically its own food group back in Texas (the other food groups being barbecue and beef ribs, of course). However, I must be getting old and losing my sweet tooth, because this was way too sweet for my liking now. I was a bit sad about that, but it was still a good pecan pie. The crust also held up well for a couple of days, which is always nice!
Overall, we really liked Betty’s Pie Whole and definitely want to return – hopefully earlier in the day next time, so that we’ll have a better selection of pies!
