Sorry for missing the Monday post this week! I’ve been quite busy lately, and with the recent heat wave, I haven’t done much cooking in the past couple of weeks. Today, I’m bringing you a post of my visit to Mochi Cream a while back.
Mochi Cream, as you might tell from the name, specializes in cream-filled mochi. There are two locations, one in the Torrance Mitsuwa Marketplace, and another in the Costa Mesa Mitsuwa. Why isn’t there one in the San Diego Mitsuwa? Sigh.
In addition to mochi ice cream, they also have mochi donuts, or “mochi-do”, which are also cream-filled. They were really adorable.
While they specialize in mochi, I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful cakes on display as well… But I restrained myself and didn’t buy any cake since they’re a bit pricey.
I ended up picking four mochi and one mochi-do:
Of the mochi, my favorite flavor was black sesame! It reminded me a bit of a black sesame tang yuan (glutinous rice ball). The other flavors were also quite nice, but the black sesame was definitely the strongest. The peach yogurt flavor was really mild.
The black sesame and cream filling was so smooth, and the mochi was soft yet chewy. Yum!
I chose the matcha mochi-do, which was a beautiful shade of green. The matcha taste was pretty strong, and I really enjoyed it. It’s hard to tell from the second picture, but there’s matcha cream inside the mochi-do!
Overall, I really enjoyed the mochi desserts here. While it is on the expensive side ($1.80-$2.10 apiece), I thought that it was a good once-in-a-while or special-occasion treat (maybe it’s a good thing we don’t have them here in SD…). There are so many more flavors that I want to try!
Ah, one last FYI – they give you the mochi from the freezer, so you need to thaw it for about 10-15 minutes before eating. Surprisingly, the chewy texture of the mochi held up really well. I’m not sure how long they can keep in the freezer, but from my experience, two weeks was fine and I didn’t notice any difference in the texture of the mochi.
